A 10-inch horizontal mixed-flow pump refers to a horizontal single-stage single-suction volute-type mixed-flow pump with a nominal inlet/outlet diameter of 10 inches (≈ 250 mm / DN250). The pump body is usually of cast iron volute structure, and the impeller mostly adopts semi-open twisted blades with a wide flow channel. It has a significantly higher tolerance for river/tank water containing a small amount of silt, aquatic plants debris compared to standard clear water centrifugal pumps.

Core advantage
1. The volute pump body and the inlet/outlet water pipes have the same diameter (commonly 10″×10″). The pump body is a single-sided opening volute casting structure. The inlet pipe is mostly horizontally axially suctioned, and the outlet pipe usually has two layouts: vertical upward discharge or horizontal lateral discharge (selected according to the pipe position in the machine room/pump house). The inlet and outlet water pipe diameters are the same (both 10 inches), and the pipe connection is intuitive.
2) Semi-open mixed-flow impeller - wide flow channel, resistant to mild dirty water
The impeller is usually composed of 3-6 semi-open twisted blades. A adjustable gap is formed between the front end and the pump cover/forewear plate. The flow channel is wide, and the cross-section of the flow passage is large, which has better tolerance for a small amount of sediment, short fibers, and water weed debris. In flood control/river scenarios, it is less likely to be stuck and rotate all day. After the gap wears out, it is generally restored by adding or reducing the paper gasket between the pump cover and the pump body.
3) Cantilever/Single suction structure - simple maintenance path
250HW belongs to the single suction cantilever concept: the impeller is at the shaft end, and the pump cover can be separated. The "main battlefield" for daily maintenance is: pump cover - gap between the impeller front end, packing/ mechanical seal, and bearing lubricating grease.
4) Shaft seal: mainly packing seal, which can be upgraded to mechanical seal
Packing seal (oil-cooled packing + water seal ring): the most common, simple structure, good maintenance in the field; the optimal compression degree is "a few drops per minute".
Mechanical seal: upgrade option, less leakage and cleaner, suitable for fixed pumping stations with stricter drip rate/ environmental protection requirements.
The shaft is usually 45# steel quenched and tempered, and the pump body/impeller main body is made of HT200/HT250 cast iron.

Working principle
The name of the mixed-flow pump comes from the direction of the water outlet in the impeller: it is neither purely radial (a centrifugal pump) nor purely axial (an axial-flow pump), but flows out obliquely along the conical surface (mixed-flow/angled-flow).
The motor (or diesel engine via belt/ coupling) drives the pump shaft to rotate → the semi-open mixed-flow impeller rotates accordingly → the liquid is sucked axially into the central area of the impeller, and under the combined action of centrifugal force and the thrust of the blades, it is accelerated and thrown obliquely along the blades into the conical-shaped discharge chamber → the conical shape gradually converts the kinetic energy into pressure energy → it is sent into the pipeline from the tangential/upper outlet flange.
This is reflected on the performance curve as follows:
The flow rate is large, and the head is concentrated in the mid-range and low-range positions such as 3–15 meters.
The power curve is relatively flat: when the flow rate increases, the shaft power does not surge as sharply as that of some centrifugal pumps. "The diesel engine/motor will not be overloaded by the large water flow" is a characteristic that it is very useful in the field/for flood control.
Application fields
Farmland irrigation / alternate irrigation: Water is lifted from rivers, reservoirs, and main canals, and then sent to the fields through open channels or low-pressure pipelines; with a large flow rate, a low lift height, the ability to drink a little turbid water, and stable efficiency, this is its strong suit.
Flood control and drainage / drainage of polder areas: Low-lying polder areas, drainage ditches, and corners of flood detention areas, use it to forcefully drain the accumulated water back to the main river or to the low-lying areas where water is discarded; it can be fixedly installed or towed for movement.
Water intake from rivers / reservoirs: At the head of the canal, or at the water intake point beside the temporary embankment, water is directly drawn from the water body and sent away.
Water exchange and replenishment for fish ponds / shrimp ponds: The wide flow channel is more tolerant of the suspended state of mud at the bottom of the pond, but be careful with the filter screen - don't let it suck in "thick slurry".
Drainage of water accumulation at construction sites / foundation pits / mine pits: The prerequisite remains "water as the main component, with a small amount of fine sand"; if it is already in a thick slurry-like state, it should return to the selection of slurry pumps / submersible pumps, and don't force it to use mixed-flow pumps.
